Actor Kamal Haasan has found himself at the center of a controversy in Karnataka following his remarks during the audio launch of Thug Life, where he stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. The comment has triggered protests across the state, with some Kannada organizations reportedly tearing down banners of the film and threatening to block its release in Karnataka, including in Bengaluru.
Reacting to the controversy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned Kamal Haasan’s statement, saying, “Kannada has a rich and ancient history. Kamal Haasan clearly lacks understanding of it.”
Karnataka BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa also criticized Haasan, stating, “It is important to love one’s mother tongue, but not at the cost of disrespecting another. Artists, in particular, must show respect toward all languages. Kamal Haasan, who has acted in several Indian languages including Kannada, has disrespected Kannada in his effort to glorify Tamil. That shows sheer arrogance.”
With strong opposition building against the actor in Karnataka, the release of Thug Life in the state may face hurdles unless tensions subside.
