Competition and stress at India’s top technology colleges, the Indian Institutes of Technology, is not new. In an attempt to induce students to socialize and relax, IIT Kharagpur cuts off power to its hostels for an hour in the evening.
The institute decided to take matter into its hands after three students killed themselves earlier this year. Mental health professionals reported that there were high levels of depression as well some mental disorders among students on campus. The institute is also planning on installing free tea and coffee vending machines to draw students and encourage them to meet.
