The parliamentary board of the Bharatiya Janata Party is meeting today to discuss its candidate for the July 17 presidential polls.
A three-member BJP panel will meet with the Opposition to discuss the possibility of a consensus candidate and the parliamentary board will further deliberate the response the panel’s talks. Both the ruling side and the Opposition are waiting for the other side to propose their candidate before revealing their own. Some of the names doing the rounds are that of former diplomat Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Shiv Sena-backed MS Swaminathan, Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu, ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj. Swaraj had dismissed the rumours.
Possible candidates for vice-president’s post, which will be vacant from August this year, are also being discussed.
