EC postpones next hearing in ‘Two-Leaves’ symbol case to 23rd October

The Election Commission of India (EC) has postponed the next hearing in the case relating to the allocation of ‘Two-Leaves’ symbol to next Monday (23rd October).

EC has been hearing arguments by the concerned parties i.e. counsels representing the unified AIADMK led by EPS-OPS and another faction represented by jailbird Dinakaran who got leading advocate Ashwinikumar to argue the case on his behalf. While is almost certain that the EC might allot the party’s symbol, name and flag to the ruling AIADMK led by EPS-OPS, Dinakaran is trying his best to play spoilsport.

It may be recalled that the Madurai Bench of the High Court of Madras had earlier directed that a final decision on allotting the symbol, name and flag of AIADMK may be made by 31st October after which voluminous documents/affidavits were furnished by the unified AIADMK led by EPS-OPS and also by jailbird Dinakaran.  Yesterday, EC turned down plea by jailbird Dinakaran’s counsel to permanently freeze the symbol.

The EPS-OPS faction has also submitted to EC copies of resolution, passed at the Sept.12 AIADMK general council meeting held at Vaanagaram off Chennai, wherein jailbird Sasikala’s appointment as the party’s general secretary was nullified.  The EPS-OPS faction demanded that a verdict be delivered on 06th October itself but jailbird Dinakaran’s side demanded more time from EC to submit documents.

The hearing slated for last Friday (13th Oct.) was postponed to yesterday.  After hearing the arguments of all the concerned parties, the EC has postponed the next (and final?) hearing in the case to 11:00 a.m. on 23rd October (next Monday).
