Fresh details have emerged about Superstar Rajinikanth‘s 173rd film, which is shaping up to be one of his most anticipated projects. Following the massive success of Coolie, Rajinikanth is currently shooting for Jailer 2 under director Nelson Dilipkumar. Simultaneously, preparations are underway for his next venture — his 173rd film — to be directed by Cibi Chakravarthy (known for Don) and produced by Kamal Haasan‘s Raaj Kamal Films International.

According to the latest buzz from film industry sources, this project is likely to be an official or inspired adaptation of the 2022 Hollywood crime thriller The Outfit, starring Mark Rylance. In the original film, Rylance plays a quiet, skilled English tailor running a small shop in 1950s Chicago, whose seemingly peaceful life becomes entangled in a dangerous web of mob rivalries, secrets, and betrayal—all unfolding within the confines of his tailoring shop.

Reports suggest that Rajinikanth will essay a similar central character: a calm, understated tailor whose shop becomes the stage for intense drama, suspense, and crime elements. This would mark a significant departure for the Superstar, moving away from his signature larger-than-life action and mass-hero roles into a more restrained, character-driven performance in a contained thriller setting.

Current Project Status

  • Director: Cibi Chakravarthy
  • Producer: Raaj Kamal Films International (Kamal Haasan)
  • Music: Expected to be Anirudh Ravichander
  • Release Window: Pongal 2027 (via Red Giant Movies)
  • Tagline Tease: “Every Hero has a Family” — hinting at strong emotional/family undertones blended with commercial elements
  • Shooting is expected to begin around April 2026, as confirmed by Rajinikanth during his recent Pongal greetings event.

While no official confirmation has come from the makers yet, the speculation gained traction after a recent teaser/poster reportedly featured sewing tools and tailoring equipment, prompting fans to connect the dots with The Outfit.

Rajinikanth has previously expressed interest in doing something “different” and “challenging” in his later career phase. If true, this remake/adaptation would be a bold experiment — bringing the Superstar into a slow-burn, dialogue-heavy, single-location thriller genre rarely seen in his filmography.

Fans are already excited about the possibility of seeing Thalaivar in a completely fresh avatar. An official announcement is expected soon. Will Rajinikanth surprise everyone once again with this unique role? Watch this space!
