‘Raatchasi’... You may expect a horror movie when you hear this title. You’re not that far off. This film talks about the horrors of the education system and what happens when one begins to question the problems that are prevalent. The trailer starts with a hard-hitting dialogue in which one hears Jyothika say: “People who just speak about the injustice that happens without stopping it, become part of it. Those who oppose the injustice, become a part of history.” There is a shot of Jyothika standing as one woman against a crowd. This subtly shows a sad truth that there are very few who stand up and fight for justice.
This is yet another film about a progressive teacher who wants to change the educational system. But such films are a dire need with the current scenario, so let’s see what this film has to offer. There are two sides to the protagonist that are presented. Jyothikaa, a teacher, finds herself in a school which is defined by lack of discipline on all sides. With the teachers and management, you see her tough side come out. And with the children, you see her nurturing side show itself. After ‘Kaakha Kaakha’, Jyothika is back as a teacher again. It will be interesting to see how convincingly she can pull off the two facets, especially the tough one. Along with her in this film are actors Poornima Bhagyaraj, Sathyan, Hareesh Peradi and Kavitha Bharathi who are known for their performances in various movies.
Jyothika is faced with opposition for her initiatives and bold moves. The film seems to be a story of how she tackles the people who stand in the way of what she thinks is right. While the dialogue delivery seems a little forced, the lines themselves are very meaningful. A dialogue about whose poverty the government is eradicating poses a deep question about the way the school system operates and for whose benefit. Editor Phiomin Raj of Maanagram fame and music composer Sean Roldan are sure to be strong assets to the crew. The background score in the video presents a glimpse of what we will be treated to. They will be ably assisted by Pannaiyarum Padminiyum cinematographer Gokul Benoy.
Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the movie is expected to release in June. What appears to be the biggest challenge for the movie is to stand apart from the other ones in the same genre. Let’s wait and watch what debut director Sy Gowtham Raj and Jyothika have to offer. It may be her school, but will it also be her movie all the way?
