A man from Mumbai, who was angry over his daughter spending time hooked to her mobile phone, allegedly set her ablaze on Monday.
The 40-year-old accused, who has been identified as Mohammed Mansuri, originally from Bihar, lives with his wife and four children in Virar, Mumbai. He set his 16-year-old daughter Shahista on fire when he found her talking on the phone, assuming she was speaking to a guy. “On Monday afternoon, Mansuri saw his daughter speaking on her phone when he went to tell her to serve lunch. He thought she was speaking to a boy, which made him angry,” the deputy superintendent of the Virar police station said.
The man apparently snatched the phone out of the girl’s hand, before smashing it on the ground and pouring kerosene over her, apparently. The girl’s mother, who got home as soon as she heard her daughter’s cry for help, rushed her to the hospital with the help of a couple of neighbours. The girl has reportedly suffered 70 percent burns and is currently in a serious condition.
Mansuri has been arrested and booked on charges of attempt to murder under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
