Now, the latest footage from The Matrix: Resurrections has arrived. While the first official trailer is slated for release tomorrow, the movie team teased the audience with an innovative promotion strategy. In advance of the first trailer, Warner Bros. has launched a brand-new website featuring an interactive and widely divergent first look at the newest installment in the 22-year-old franchise. Website: www.whatisthematrix.com
On the website, users are greeted with a simple choice: Click on the blue pill, and stick to the reality you’ve known your whole life; click on the red pill, and signal that you’re ready to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. Netizens who click on the blue pill hear a voiceover by Neil Patrick Harris's character saying, “you’ve lost your capacity to discern reality from fiction,” before urging the user to accept that their reality is real, as the current time flashes on the screen.
In contrast, if the fans choose the red pill, they will hear Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s voice telling them that while they believe it’s the current time - again, with the actor reading the current time aloud - “that couldn’t be further from the truth.” During both scenarios, a series of quick-cut shots from “Resurrections” flashes on the screen, with the footage changing slightly each time a user clicks on a pill.
Keanu Reeves was seen in his 'John Wick' look. In the footage, Reeves’ Neo swallowing a blue pill while a much older, bald man appears in his reflection. Neo’s medication pill bottle, prescribed to his Matrix alter ego Thomas Anderson was shown. The first look of Abdul Mateen's character was teased. In a shot, a man who looks like Neo taking a frightening step off a very tall building, which seems to be a test of his reality.
One of the first shots from 1999’s “The Matrix” of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) sitting alone at a chair as soldiers move in on her was reprised in the teaser. Also, Neo walking iconically in a noir-y street while a coffee house called “Simulatte” shining in the background. These shots were the highlight of the first look teaser. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci are the new additions to The Matrix 4.
