Infosys in Hyderabad is in the news for a wrong reason. The software giant has been accused of illegally charging parking fee from its employees. Employees have been charged Rs 500 for 4-wheelers and Rs 250 for 2-wheelers.
As per activist Vijay Gopal, this levy is totally illegitimate. He says that Infosys is bound by the rules made as per the Shops and Establishments Act. “Although the Infosys campus is part of the Pocharam SEZ, it has to abide by the rules pertaining to commercial establishments,” he tells a newspaper, adding that he has taken up the issue with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Labour Department in Telangana.
Does Infosys have any defence? Yes, apparently. As per some, the company is not wrong in charging the parking fee as its parking area is not used for any commercial activity. The company is said to transfer the parking fee to an employees’ welfare fund. This fund goes into the maintenance of the parking lot.
