Lakshmy Ramakrishnan is one of the unsung heroes among female filmmakers who has a clear vision on her themes, deft touches in etching out unique characterizations and a strong grip on film as a storytelling medium. Her debut ‘Aarohanam’ delved deep into the psyche of an everyday housewife suffering from bipolar disorder. Her ‘Ammani’ drew parallels between a homeless woman and a sacrificing mother.
‘House Owner’ is Lakshmy’s fourth feature film and this time she has apparently chosen another psychological study on human nature in the wake of impending danger. Kishore and Sri Ranjani play an aged husband and wife caught in the Chennai floods 2015 with the former slightly unhinged. From the visuals it is clear that as the water level rises the husband loses his grip on reality and his past life explodes inside him. Lovelyn Chandrasekhar and ‘Pasanga’ Kishore play the younger selves of the lead pair.
Lakshmy Ramakrishnan deserves praise for the ‘House Owner’ teaser cut which is intriguing, teases that there is something more to the visuals than what meets the eye. Ghibran’s music, Krishnasekhar TS’s cinematography and C.S. Premkumar’s editing have jelled together to seal the deal with the audiences in evoking great curiosity about the film.
