Delivering a historic verdict the Supreme Court of India has decriminalized gay sex by scrapping the 158 years old section 377 that saw it as a criminal offence. Judge Dipak Misra who headed the 5 member bench has stated ”LGBT Community has same rights as of any ordinary citizen. Respect for each others rights, and others are supreme humanity. Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible,” .
Under Section 377 which was constituted by the British gives jail term of 10 years to anyone indulging in unnatural sex against men, women or animals. Over the years the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community have lamented that the cops used it mainly to harass them. Social activists have welcomed the judgement and the community see it as a great relief for them as effectively homosexuality has been legalized in India. The LGBT community in Chennai joined their counterparts all over India in celebrating their rights.
