A petition given by two young Coimbatore based girls today in the district collector’s office has sent shock waves across the city. Initially, as the girls entered the collector’s office premises, and announced that they had come to meet the collector Rajamani, the officials at the office weren’t amused.
While they were very normal in dealing with them as they see numerous petitions on a daily basis, only later did they notice media and cameras behind the two girls and sensed something serious happening. The media presence there was attributed to the sensation their petition had.
Santhakumar works in Coimbatore, and his daughters Oviya and Thamizh Eezham studying 9th standard and college 3rd year respectively had entered the collector’s office with a petition that read “Pollachi sexual abuse has been happening since the past 7 years, and hearing these incidents, we are scared. Police department has been ignorant and not taking proper action against the accused, and we are in a situation to safeguard ourselves, and hence we request permission to own gun to protect ourselves”. This shocking petition exposes the unsafe and dangerous environment for women prevailing in our society and state in general.
