CM’s ‘Jananayagan’: OTT Giants Clash for Rights!

The film ‘Jananayagan’, starring Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, has generated massive expectations since its inception. However, the release date was repeatedly pushed back as the Censor Board (CBFC) hesitated to grant clearance due to the film’s controversial political dialogues and scenes.
Last April, news surfaced that the movie had leaked online before its theatrical release. Shocked by this development, Amazon Prime abruptly cancelled its OTT deal, which was valued at approximately ₹120 crore. This was considered a significant setback for the production house, KVN Productions.
In a dramatic turn of events, Vijay secured a landslide victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10th. As the final film featuring a sitting Chief Minister, global interest in ‘Jananayagan’ has skyrocketed manifold.

Amazon, which had previously cancelled the contract, has now re-entered negotiations. Meanwhile, leading streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar are also reportedly competing to acquire the rights by offering record-breaking prices never seen before.
With the censorship hurdles now amicably resolved, the film is expected to hit the screens within a few weeks. Trade experts in Kollywood suggest that as the first film to be released after Vijay’s ascent to the CM’s throne, its digital and satellite rights are set to create a new historical record in Tamil cinema.
