The ethical mistakes in ‘Geetha Govindam’

‘Geetha Govindam’ is entertainment for most, but it’s also unacceptable misogyny for some. The complaints are valid. Just as so many romantic-comedies normalize stalking and harassment in the name of entertainment, ‘Geetha Govindam’ too does it.
Writes columnist Sankeertana Varma on Twitter, “Our hero (Vijay Deverakonda as Vijay Govind) is a great guy who doesn’t touch a married woman, even when she’s offering a handshake. He is okay with creepily caressing an unmarried one’s feet when she is sleeping though. Because women are property. If not a husband’s, then yours.”
She finds fault with the portrayal of Rahul Ramakrishna’s character as the scapegoat. “The drunk friend is blamed for what Vijay does. Listening to a drunk friend and acting upon that advice is his choice. His fault. Also, taking a selfie is his idea. He is a creep and he uses his friend as a shield to be one,” Sankeertana laments.
The hero tries to take a selfie with a girl without her consent. But the same character talks about ‘samskaram’ in the pre-interval scene. “And do not talk about ’samaskaram’ and privacy when you were contemplating kissing a sleeping woman and took a picture of her without her permission a minute ago,” the columnist writes.
