A key development has emerged from the Telugu film industry as the Telangana Exhibitors Association has officially appealed to Tollywood producers and star heroes to shift from the existing rental system to the percentage-sharing model for theatrical releases.
In a detailed letter, the exhibitors stated that the current rental system is becoming increasingly difficult for single-screen theatres to sustain. They expressed concern that several theatres could eventually shut down if the industry continues to follow the same model without changes.
The association emphasized that the percentage-sharing model has already been functioning for nearly 40 weeks annually and urged producers to implement the same system even during the release period of major commercial entertainers and star-driven films.
Exhibitors also pointed out that multiplex chains are already benefiting from percentage-based revenue sharing, while many single-screen theatres continue to struggle financially under the rental structure. They further noted that blockbuster films like Pushpa: The Rise were distributed in several other states through the percentage model, which they believe offers a more balanced approach.
Another issue highlighted in the appeal was the steady decline in theatrical run durations. According to exhibitors, shorter theatrical windows and rapidly changing audience trends have added further pressure on theatre owners, especially in smaller centres.
The letter has now triggered fresh conversations within the Telugu film industry regarding theatre sustainability and distribution economics. Industry circles are keenly waiting to see how producers and leading stars respond to the exhibitors’ request.
