Telangana gets intense heat wave warning from IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow warning’, indicating heatwave conditions expected to persist over the next two days across Telangana. On March 31, 2024, a warm night is anticipated in isolated areas of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagital, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, and Peddapally districts. Subsequently, on April 1, 2024, heatwave conditions are highly likely to occur in isolated pockets within these districts, as well as in Jayashankar Bhupalapally and Mulugu.

Furthermore, a warm night is predicted on April 1, 2024, in select regions of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagital, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, and Mulugu districts. Heatwave conditions are forecasted to persist in isolated areas of these districts on April 2, 2024.

Dry weather is expected to prevail over Telangana for the coming days, with temperatures gradually rising by 2-3°C in isolated areas over the next three days. Telangana Weatherman T Balaji stated, “Heatwaves are likely to persist from April 2-6, 2024, across Telangana, with temperatures exceeding 42°C in Hyderabad and reaching 43-44°C in Adilabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Wanaparthy. The peak of the heatwaves is anticipated on April 4, 5, and 6, with the possibility of heat-induced storms in certain areas.”

In addition to Telangana, the IMD has issued heatwave warnings for several South Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh until April 4. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has specifically warned of temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius in Telangana.

As per the weather department’s forecast, temperatures across various districts of the state are expected to range from 41 to 44 degrees Celsius until April 3. A heatwave, as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is characterized by “a period of abnormally hot weather, often defined with reference to a relative temperature threshold, lasting from two days to months.”

With temperatures projected to soar as high as 44 degrees Celsius in various districts of Telangana, the IMD Hyderabad’s heatwave warning for the state remains in effect until April 3.
