A Delhi sessions court will begin hearings on the Sunanda Pushkar death case starting February 21 in which her husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is facing abetment to suicide and cruelty charges.

After dismissing BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s plea to assist the court in the issue, a Delhi court on Monday sent the case to Sessions court after the completion of the procedure under Section 207 Code of Criminal Procedure, for further proceedings.

The Congress MP’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances on January 17, 2014, a day after she had an ugly verbal altercation with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar on Twitter. On January 16, Sunanda had posted tweets that hinted to a possible romantic affair between Shashi Tharoor and Mehr Tarar.

Following an autopsy, Sunanda’s body had been cremated. The autopsy report at that time had hinted that she had died of an overdose of sleeping pills. However, the report was inconclusive as to how she died and whether it was a suicide or not. Tharoor, who is the sole accused in the matter, is charged for abetment of suicide under Section 306 and committing cruelty under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code.

The Congress MP, who had called the charge sheet “preposterous,” said, “No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part.” Tharoor was granted bail on July 7.
