Celebrated playback singer Vani Jairam, 77, is no more. She was on Saturday found dead at her residence in Chennai. As per the police, there was an injury on her forehead. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the singer sang hundreds of songs in various languages.
An accomplished singer, Vani excelled in multiple genres across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tulu and Oriya. The three-time recipient of the National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, Vani crooned more than 10,000 songs.
Netizens, while mourning her demise, are saying that the sad news comes just two days after legendary filmmaker K Viswanath passed away. Incidentally, Vani sang songs in K Viswanath's classics such as 'Swarna Kamalam', 'Sankeertana', 'Shankarabharanam', 'Sruthilayalu' and 'Gharshana' are some of the titles in which she sang songs.
Besides working with music directors of the old era (such as Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, RD Burman, and KV Mahadevan), she also collaborated with many new-age composers as well. Her concerts used to be popular among lovers of music.
