Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi was gheraoed by the locals when she visited the Pillaiyarkuppam locality to inspect the local authorities’ functioning.
Bedi, India’s first-ever woman IPS officer who once served as the in-charge of the high-security Tihar Jail in the national capital, was made by the ruling BJP at the Centre as Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor some time back. Bedi has made it a practice to be pro-active and has been regularly visiting many places in the State to inspect on-going works of many kinds and to check the functioning of local authorities.
After intimating on social networking sites in advance about her inspection at Pillaiyarkuppam, she visited the place. Whatever response Bedi might have anticipated, she was in for a shock as the locals gheraoed her official vehicle and blamed her for ‘preventing’ the implementation of many welfare schemes of the Govt. including the distribution of free rice via PDS shops.
This forced Bedi to retreat and cancel her proposed inspection of the authorities’ work at Pillaiyarkuppam. It may be noted that this is not the first time that Bedi has been gheraoed by the people.
