Actor Jayam Ravi who is one of the bankable stars of Kollywood completed 14 years of acting career recently. His debut film 'Jayam' released in 2003 and turned out to be an all class massive hit. Since then he has given many hits and a few misses but one constant and striking feature is that he has always been ready to do any kind of character and submit himself to the demands of the story.
After making his debut with a boy next door image, Ravi successfully emerged as a macho action hero playing a kick boxer in 'M Kumaran S/o Mahalakshmi' which was his second film. Then he continued giving hit films directed by his brother and retained that good boy image.
When there were murmurs that he is not getting out of his safe fold, read his brother director M.Raja and father producer Mohan, Ravi made a big leap with director S.P.Jananathan's 'Peranmai' which was a critically acclaimed super hit. In that film Ravi not only chisled his physique and body language to play the role of a NCC coach who takes up a mission to save the nation from foreign attack. It was also the role of a person hailing from a tribal community who gets insulted by his superior officers and even students for getting the benefits of caste based reservation. This calls for guts for a hero to play this kind of a character coming out of his safe zone.
Then he played a effeminate villain in 'Aadhi Bhagavan' directed by Ameer. The film released after so many delays and eventually failed at the box office but Ravi's performance was very much appreciated.
After a lull period Ravi dedicated a few years of his career for what can be termed as the Best Film ever from him-'Thani Oruvan'. Ravi was perfectly fitting and earnest in the role of Mithran IPS an intelligent IPS officer taking on a clever and cunning mafia leader. The hardwork and dedication paid off handsomely as the film turned out to be a huge blockbuster and also won unanimous critical acclaim.
Post 'Thani Oruvan', Jayam Ravi has been focusing more on experimental concepts and role. He played the lead role in 'Miruthan' which is India's first ever Zombie film. He also acted as a Zombie in the film and the sequel to the film is on the cards.
This year's 'Bogan' is another out of the box film which dealt with the concept of Body swapping. Ravi had to play both positive and negative characters in the film and he pulled off the challenge with sheer brilliance.
Now in the recently released 'Vanamagan', Ravi has played a tribal who does not even know to speak. Every reviewer is praising Jayam Ravi's performance and we could see a lot of posts in social media, appreciating his hard work and dedication to play this role.
After 'Vanamagan', Jayam Ravi's next film will be 'Tik Tik Tik' which will be India's first space film. We can be assured that this will be a brand new experience for Tamil movie buffs as the film is supposedly being shot in a spacecraft.
Later this year, Jayam Ravi will start shooting for the biggest film of his career in terms of budget and scale. Yes we are referring to'Sangamithra' for which the actor is reported to have dedicated two years of his career. The tall and handsome actor will be seen as a historical warrior for the first time and given that he has undergone immense training for the role, we can expect that he would pull off the challenge with consummate ease.
The line up films shows that above anything, Jayam Ravi has a constant urge to experiment and act in different kinds of films than beating around the bush. This special quality, which is rarely found in a commercial film star is sure to take this dignified actor to greater heights in future.
