India’s Covid-19 tally crosses 1-lakh mark for the first time

In what has come to prove that the second wave of coronavirus is more serious than the peak of the first wave, India has logged more than one lakh cases in a single day. This has happened for the first time since the onset of the pandemic early last year. There were 103,796 new coronavirus cases in the 24-hour period, as of the end of Monday morning. 

Prior to this, the worst single-day peak was in September, when 99,181 cases were registered in September. The US is the only other country to have logged over 100,000 daily Covid-19 cases. And the country had such a figure in November 2020. 

India is now the world’s worst Covid-19 hotspot, overtaking Brazil and US. 

These are the States which have been designed as States of grave concern: Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Haryana. Maharashtra alone has got more than 50,000 cases per day of late. The Telugu States are so far better off. 

Amidst this, there are calls to ramp up vaccination. The government is expected to take a call soon. By mid-April are so, if everything goes well, all adults will be made eligible to receive the vaccine.
