'Contract marriages' have become a social menace in recent times where local women and minor girls from poor families are persuaded to marry sheikhs on a contractual basis in return for money.
The Hyderabad police today have arrested a total of 17 persons including eight sheikhs belonging to Saudi Arabia, Oman and Quatar in a marriage racket bust in the city. Four Muslim clerics, four lodge owners and five brokers were also arrested on the charges of cheating innocent girls in the name of marriage.
Police officials told that two such minor girls were rescued in the operation and that the group had actually planned to traffic at least 20 minor girls and women.
