Bharathiyar University’s vice-chancellor Ganapathy was arrested yesterday when he was caught red-handed (while taking bribe for recruiting a professor) by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) of the State Governement.
Suresh, an individual, had alerted the ACB a few days back that he had been asked to cough up Rs.3 lakhs as ‘bribe’ by Ganapathy for getting recruited as a professor at the University. The Bureau officials had been constantly watching all movements by Ganapathy during the past three days and swooped on him when he received the bribe in cash from Suresh.
Suresh paid the remaining amount of Rs.29 lakhs (after paying an advance of Re.1 lakh) to Ganapathy yesterday morning when ACB sleuths arrested the latter red-handed. Raids were also conducted by the ACB at Ganapathy’s residence as well as at his office at the University. His residence at Trichy also came under raids. Prof. Dharmaraj of the University was also arrested for his help in ‘facilitating’ the deal.
ACB officials also dug up the septic tank at the V-C’s residence and found some torn out currency notes after which the arrested V-C was interrogated for more than eight hours. His wife Swarnalatha was also arrested for her attempt to erase evidences. Ganapathy has now been remanded to judicial custody till 16th February.
