Renowned composer A.R. Rahman has addressed recent criticisms from fellow musicians regarding his use of AI technology in music production, offering a calm and thoughtful response.

Over the years, Rahman has been known for embracing cutting-edge technology in his studio work. Allegations surfaced suggesting he used AI to replicate the voices of late singers like Shahul Hameed in certain songs. This sparked criticism from some in the music industry, who questioned whether such practices were depriving new talent of opportunities.

Among them, composer Harris Jayaraj questioned the need for AI in song creation when “there are so many singers” available. Similarly, Bollywood singer Abhijeet accused Rahman of sidelining vocalists and instrumentalists by increasingly relying on artificial intelligence.

In response, A.R. Rahman addressed the issue with grace. “Abhijeet is a good friend, and I still love him,” he said. “What he said about me is his opinion, and I respect that.”

Rahman clarified his position, stating, “I use AI as a tool, not a replacement for real talent. AI can never match the vocal nuances and techniques of trained singers.”

He further emphasized his ongoing efforts to support musicians. “I’ve formed a musical group of 60 women in Dubai. For films like Ponniyin Selvan, I’ve worked with 200 to 300 musicians. So the idea that I’m taking away opportunities is simply not true. In fact, I’m creating more — I just don’t announce it publicly.”

Rahman’s statement serves as a reminder that innovation and inclusivity can go hand in hand in the world of music.
