AIADMK General Secretary V.K.Sasikala and her relatives J.Ilavarasi and V.N.Sudhakaran have been convicted by the Supreme Court today in the long drawn Disproportionate Assets case. According to this judgement, all the three convicts will have to spend four years in jail and pay a fine of Rs.10 crores per head.
This has shattered the ambition of Sasikala to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as a convicted person cannot contest in any election for ten years.
However this does not mean the end of Sasikala's party and still she has avenues for appeal. Legal experts say that Sasikala and the others can still file a review petition in the Supreme Court against the verdict and if the apex court accepts that petition, the case will be reheard by a larger bench of three or more judges.
AIADMK MP and the Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Thambidurai has said that the party will go for an appeal against the verdict convicting Sasikala and the other two accused.
