The copyright issue has become more common in Indian cinema these days due to the huge increase in using old songs in new movies. Recently, 'Manjummel Boys' and Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' received notice from Ilaiyaraaja for using 'Kanamani Anbodu' and 'Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa' without his permission.
Now, another Malayalam film seems to have used an old Tamil song without the composer's permission. 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil' is a new comedy movie starring Prithviraj, Basil Joseph, Nikhila Vimal and Anaswara Rajan. The film garnered success both in theatrical and OTT release.
The old Tamil song, 'Azhagiya Laila,' composed by Sirpy in Sundar C's 1996 film 'Ullathai Allitha' is used multiple times in this movie. Composer Sirpy said in a recent interview, "No one asked my permission to use the song but at the same time, I heard that the movie crew got permission from the music company that owns the song."
"I will not take any legal action and will not ask for money from the film crew, but it will be enough if they credit my name in the film. So far I haven't seen this movie, I will request them if my name is not there in the credits after watching the movie," added the veteran composer. This is now going viral on social media.
