Actor Soori’s latest film Maaman hit theaters today and has been receiving positive responses from audiences. Early viewers have praised the film, calling the first half entertaining and the second half emotional and touching.

However, a celebration held by fans in Madurai has stirred controversy. A group of Soori’s fans organized a “man choru” (mud rice) ritual, a traditional act performed to pray for a film’s success. Photos and videos of the event went viral on social media — but not everyone was pleased.

Reacting strongly to the celebration, Soori expressed his disappointment in a public statement. “I’m ashamed to call those who did man choru in Madurai my brothers,” he said. “This is absolute foolishness. If a film has a good story and is well made, it will succeed. Eating mud rice won’t make it run.”

Deeply upset by the gesture, Soori added, “Your actions hurt me. The money spent on this could have been used to buy food, water, or buttermilk for people in need. Those who do such meaningless acts are not worthy of being my fans.”

His emotional outburst has sparked debate online, with many praising his grounded approach and honesty.
