Veteran actress Jayanthi passes away

Jayanthi, the yesteryear actress, is no more. She breathed her last earlier today. Her son spoke to a national daily and said that the 76-year-old actress died in sleep due to age-related illnesses.
In her illustrious career spanning decades, Jayanthi acted in all major South Indian languages. She also dabbled in Hindi and Marathi movies. In Kannada, she was widely feted for excelling in a number of performance-oriented roles. So much so, Jayanthi was known by the moniker of Abhinaya Sharadhe in Karnataka. The government feted her more than half a dozen times with state awards for her remarkable performances in acclaimed movies.
Born as Kamala Kumari, Jayanthi was married to actor-director Peketi Sivaram, who passed away in 2006. After shining in melodramatic roles through the 1960s and later, Jayanthi went on to act in star vehicles such as 'Pedarayudu' and 'Gharana Bullodu' in the 1990s in character roles. In Telugu, she was widely familiar with essaying sentimental roles in family dramas.
