The Govt. of Tamil Nadu has decided to set up a control room to exclusively monitor the movements of private taxis and buses plying in the State.
Union Transport Department passed an order in January this year, making it mandatory for all private vehicles (taxis, buses, vans, etc.) used for public transport to be fitted with speed-governors and GPRS devices to enable their location whenever necessary. It had given time to all States and Union Territories to fall in line and set up a control room for such monitoring by 01st April. It was said that the move was intended reduce accidents and acts of crime committed in such vehicles.
However, most States including Tamil Nadu haven’t so far complied with the above-said order. It is in this backdrop that the Govt. of Tamil Nadu has announced that it would soon set up a control room to monitor and track the movements of private taxis, buses, vans, etc.
There are as many as 2 lakh such vehicles whose movements would be monitored by the proposed control room which would also check for speed-governors and GPRS devices. RTO offices in the State have also been alerted to fall in line and direct all private vehicles used for public transport to fix speed-governors and GRPS devices.
