Iconic and legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal's passing away left a big disappointment in everyone. The successful filmmaker has done a lot of films and stood as the icon for parallel cinema. Meanwhile, there is an interesting observation that the Telangana culture and the fighting spirit highly influenced him.
Films that earned his name have a deep connection to Telangana, showcasing the region's complexities and challenges. Starting from Ankur to Well Done Abba, most of his films are either set in Telangana or influenced from this region.
Ankur which was released in 1974 is set in a rural Telangana village, exploring themes of social inequality and rebellion. And then, we have Nishant which was released in 1975 was inspired by the Telangana Rebellion.
Susman which was released in 1987 explores the struggles of traditional artisans, particularly the "Ikat" handloom weavers of Pochampally. The 1983 released film Mandi offers a commentary on the region's complex social dynamics. Well Done Abba which came out in 2009 is insired by a real-life incident in Telangana.
