Sparking a huge row, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that he doesn't understand why the US establishment is silent on what has been happening in India. In other words, the PM-in-waiting wants the American President and White House to interfere in India's internal affairs in the name of protecting democracy.
The former Congress President, who represents the Wayanad constituency in Lok Sabha, has been trolled for making the remarks. "This is nothing but crossing the Rubicon," a social media influencer opined.
Several commentators are of the view that what RaGa has said is bizarre. Senior journalist Rahul Shivshankar asked, "Is Rahul Gandhi pushing for foreign meddling in Indian affairs? Do we need certificates from foreign countries? Isn't our own opposition enough? Or has the Congress accepted it is now irrelevant?" Columnist Akhilesh Mishra wrote, "Many of us always wonder as to what kind of men were those who invited foreign powers to invade India, just for their momentary personal benefit, and ended up enslaving India for centuries."
The BJP is likely to make it a political issue. BJP's Amit Malviya tweeted, "At a time when the Prime Minister, Home Minister and other senior leaders of the BJP are campaigning across poll-bound states, Rahul Gandhi is busy doing video calls with professors in the US and making puerile statements... After losing, he will crib about lack of democracy and blame the people."
