In a massive setback, the Madras High Court has imposed a full stay on the release of Karthi-starrer Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy and produced by Studio Green Gnanavel Raja, effectively cancelling its scheduled worldwide theatrical release on December 12, 2025.
The court’s drastic order comes over an unpaid debt of ₹10.35 crore (now escalated to ₹21.78 crore with interest) that Studio Green had borrowed from businessman Arjunlal Sundardas, who was declared insolvent by the same court back in 2014. The Official Assignee managing Sundardas’ assets filed a petition seeking recovery of the amount and an interim injunction on the film.
During today’s hearing before the division bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan:
The judges observed:
Consequently, the court ordered: “Until the entire debt is fully repaid, ‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ shall not be released in theatres, OTT platforms, or any other medium.”
With this blanket ban in place, the much-anticipated December 12 release stands officially cancelled. The film crew is yet to issue an official statement, leaving Karthi fans and the entire industry stunned.
