The board of directors of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) have unanimously approved National Tennis Day in Spain to be celebrated annually on 20-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal's birthday on June 3.
According to reports, while Jorge Mir Mayor, director of the Tennis Clubs of Real Club Jolaseta, promoted the idea, Alex Corretja vocalized it during the broadcast of Nadal's game at the Roland Garros on Eurosport. Speaking about the decision, RFET's President Miguel Diaz said, "I was listening to Eurosport comments about Nadal's game and I immediately understood that the idea was magnificent. Spanish Tennis has a lot to celebrate. We have the most outstanding tennis player of all time. We are current Davis Cup champions and we are in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. I think, as I say, we have a lot to celebrate."
The inauguration of the National Tennis Day in Spain will reportedly happen on June 3, 2022. Nadal recently announced his decision to not participate in Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics in a bid to prolong his career. His social media post read, "Hi all, I have decided not to participate at this year's Championships at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It's never an easy decision to take but after listening to my body and discuss it with my team I understand that it is the right decision."
