A petition seeking scrapping of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu’s ambitious ‘subsidized Scooty scheme’ for working women has been filed with the Madurai Bench of the High Court of Madras.
As per the electoral promise made by the late chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa, the Govt. of Tamil Nadu has been receiving applications from working women (meeting the set criteria) to provide them 50% subsidy of Rs.25,000 for purchase of Scooty worth Rs.50,000. It is reported that 3.36 lakh girls and women have applied for reaping the benefits under this scheme.
The first phase of the scheme is to be implemented from 24th February (coinciding with the 70th birthday of the deceased chief-minister) for which scrutiny of applications is under way. It is now confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would attend the birthday celebrations while inaugurating the scheme.
In the meantime, Ramkumar Adithan of Tiruchendur has filed a petition with the Madurai Bench of the High Court of Madras seeking scrapping of the above-said scheme in view of the weakening economic condition of the State. The petition hasn’t yet been taken up by the Court.
