Seasoned politician C. Ramachandraiah is poised to reclaim his seat as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), while the Jana Sena Party (JSP) prepares to secure its first MLC seat in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition has finalized its nominations for the two MLC seats that fell vacant in the MLAs' quota, with the by-elections scheduled for the 12th of this month. The decision was made by NDA coalition leaders on Monday.
C. Ramachandraiah, a prominent figure who recently switched his allegiance from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ahead of the elections, has been offered the opportunity to serve as an MLC once again by the TDP. For the second seat, the NDA coalition has selected P. Hariprasad, the political secretary to JSP's chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Both candidates will formally submit their nominations on Tuesday, and given the strength of the NDA coalition in the legislative assembly, their victory in the MLC by-elections is expected to be a mere formality.
Prior to the assembly elections, MLCs C. Ramachandraiah and Sheikh Mohammad Iqbal left the YSRCP to join the TDP. Ramachandraiah faced disqualification, while Iqbal voluntarily resigned from his MLC position, necessitating the by-elections for the two seats.
The JSP, having triumphed in all 21 Assembly and two Lok Sabha seats it contested in the recent elections, in alliance with the TDP and BJP under the NDA banner, is now set to enter the legislative council. P. Hariprasad, the JSP's political secretary, has been nominated as the party's MLC candidate, while senior TDP leader C. Ramachandraiah will be nominated to the Council for a second time.
The two MLC seats became vacant following the disqualification of Ramachandraiah and the resignation of former IPS officer Shaik Mohd Iqbal, both of whom were previously nominated under the MLA quota by the YSRCP. Their terms were set to end on March 29, 2027. Prior to the elections, Ramachandraiah distanced himself from the YSRCP and joined the TDP, leading to the YSRCP filing a disqualification petition against him.
The NDA's strategic move to fill the vacant seats with seasoned politicians and an emerging party representative is expected to consolidate the coalition's position in the legislative council, further strengthening its political clout within the state. The JSP's entry into the council marks a significant milestone for the party, expanding its footprint in Andhra Pradesh's political landscape.
