Argentina football great Lionel Messi has overtaken Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo to set the record for the most liked post by a sportsperson in the history of Instagram.

A picture of Messi, holding the Copa America trophy, posted right after Argentina's victory in the finals against Brazil earlier this month, currently has over 20 million likes. Celebrating the historic win, Messi, who has over 232 million followers on his social media handle, had captioned the picture, "What a beautiful madness! This is unbelievable! Thank you, God! We are the champions!" The post broke the previous record of 19.8 million likes held by Ronaldo in his post paying tribute to late football legend Diego Maradona.

The Argentina striker's post is also the 6th most liked picture by any person in the history of Instagram. Lionel Messi secured his first major international trophy with Argentina after winning 1 - 0 over Brazil at the Maracana stadium on July 10.
