Legendary Playback Singer S. Janaki Passes Away

Indian music has lost one of its most iconic voices. Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” passed away today at the age of 88.

The news of her demise was announced by her granddaughter, Apsara Vydyula, through an emotional post on Instagram. The family stated that the legendary singer passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.

Born in April 1938 in Repalle, Andhra Pradesh, S. Janaki began her remarkable playback singing journey with the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu in 1957. In the very same year, she showcased her extraordinary versatility by recording songs in six different Indian languages, laying the foundation for an unparalleled career.

Over a glorious career spanning more than six decades, Janaki recorded nearly 48,000 songs across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and several other languages. Her soulful voice, impeccable expression, and remarkable versatility made her one of India’s most celebrated playback singers.

Her immense contribution to Indian cinema earned her four National Film Awards and 33 State Awards, among numerous other honours. She remained one of the most respected and beloved voices in Indian music, inspiring generations of singers and musicians.

S. Janaki was married to V. Ramprasad, who played a significant role in supporting and shaping her musical journey.

With her passing, Indian cinema has lost a legendary artist whose timeless songs will continue to resonate with music lovers for generations.
