Katy Perry has announced that she is leaving the show American Idol after seven seasons as a judge. The 39-year-old singer announced that, from what it seems, this season will be the last one during her guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Perry expressed further wishes for exploration of the world and new music projects. She was a lead judge on the ABC talent show in 2018.
What drove her to make the decision to leave was her desire to beat her own drum and lead a life beyond the show.
While she left the door open for a return, she quite pointed towards the fact that she was looking to grow as an individual.
The announcement by Perry precedes the season premiere, where she judges along with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. She also told how her co-judges reacted to her decision by naming her upcoming projects.
Recalling some of her experiences, Perry named some unforgettable moments, including a performance for King Charles III.
However, during her time on the show, Perry had her share of controversies, from accusations of "mom shaming" to backlash for a contestant kiss.
Perry's departure from American Idol follows a series of career highlights, including selling the rights to her albums and wrapping up her Las Vegas residency. She shares a daughter, Daisy Dove, with actor Orlando Bloom.
