An Indian couple and their grandson who were tragically killed in a multi-vehicle collision during a police pursuit earlier this week had their names confirmed by the Indian Consulate in Toronto. The Consulate General of India in Toronto sent its deepest sympathies to the victims of the Highway 401 collision, Mr. Manivannan, Mrs. Mahalakshmi, and their grandson. The consulate kept in touch with Canadian authorities and helped the mourning family.
Thought to be from Tamil Nadu, the couple was on vacation in Canada when the tragic event happened, killing their three-month-old granddaughter as well as both grandparents. Highway 401 was closed for a number of hours as a result of the at least six-car crash. The crash claimed the life of a 21-year-old robbery suspect who started the police chase.
All four people—the Indian couple and their grandson included—were declared dead at the scene, according to the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Although at first the SIU withheld the identities of the victims, it eventually disclosed that the incident also implicated the infant's parents, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother. The 38-year-old male passenger of the suspect's car was hospitalized with serious injuries, while the mother is still receiving care.
