Hostel students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras reportedly protested in campus on Wednesday after finding worms in their dinner meal.
Following the protest, the hostel committee promised serving the students better food from December 31. They have also apparently agreed to blacklist a caterer responsible for the blunder. "One of the caterers who had earlier been accused of delivering food wirh traces of hair, spider, insects etc were supposed to be replaced. But today when the students were served dinner with worms in it, it broke the dam and students in all of the hostels began protesting. The chairman of the hostel committee Dr Shaligram Tiwari and the Vice-Chairman Dr Thiagarajan came to meet us and assured that the accused caterer will be blacklisted and better food will be served from tomorrow," a PhD student was quoted as saying by Edex Live.
Earlier this month, IIT Madras registered over 180 cases of Covid-19. One of the main reasons for the infection spread was reported as overcrowding at just one mess that was operating during lockdown. "It is the only place where students from all hostels meet. All mess employees have tested positive. What else could be the source," a senior faculty member reportedly said. "Students with symptoms were allowed to use the same toilet, collect water from the same source and visit the same mess. None of the secondary contacts were taken for tests," a PG student was quoted as saying.
