After weeks of intense speculation and censor hurdles, actor Sivakarthikeyan’s much-awaited period political drama Parasakthi, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sudha Kongara, has received its U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The makers have confirmed that the film will hit theatres worldwide as scheduled on January 10, 2026, just in time for the Pongal festival.

The announcement came via an official post from Dawn Pictures, the production house, which shared: “A fire that speaks to all ages #Parasakthi censored with a U/A – striking theatres worldwide from Tomorrow #ParasakthiFromPongal #ParasakthiFromJan10.”

Censor Journey and Challenges

The film, which draws inspiration from the real-life 1965 anti-Hindi imposition agitations in Tamil Nadu, faced significant scrutiny from the CBFC. Reports indicate that the board initially recommended 23–25 cuts, particularly targeting scenes depicting strong anti-Hindi sentiments, slogans, and historical protest sequences. Director Sudha Kongara approached the Revising Committee in Mumbai, resisting major alterations that could dilute the film’s historical context and emotional core.

Despite the prolonged process and uncertainty—especially amid similar issues with other Pongal releases like Vijay’s Jana Nayagan—the team complied with necessary modifications (including some mutes and trims), securing the U/A 16+ certificate today. The certified runtime stands at approximately 2 hours 42 minutes.

Film Highlights

Parasakthi is set in 1960s Madras and revolves around the socio-political turmoil during the anti-Hindi protests. Sivakarthikeyan plays Chezhiyan, a young man (inspired by elements of real student leaders like M. Rajendran) caught in the struggle for linguistic identity. The ensemble cast includes Ravi Mohan as the antagonist (a ruthless officer), Atharvaa Murali as his brother, and Sreeleela (in her Tamil debut) in a key role.

  • Director: Sudha Kongara
  • Producer: Aakash Bhaskaran (Dawn Pictures)
  • Music: GV Prakash Kumar (his 100th film as composer)
  • Cinematography: Ravi K Chandran
  • Budget: Reported around ₹150–250 crore

This marks Sivakarthikeyan’s 25th film as lead and is positioned as a high-stakes historical action drama with powerful dialogues emphasizing resistance against language imposition.

Pongal Box Office Clash

With Parasakthi now cleared, fans can expect an epic Pongal showdown. Advance bookings are expected to open soon across major centres. The film’s release comes a day after Vijay’s Jana Nayagan (facing its own legal and censor challenges), promising intense competition at the box office.

Producer Aakash Bhaskaran’s celebratory post—“Tamil will win”—has already sparked massive buzz among audiences, reflecting the film’s emotional connect to Tamil pride.
