Rahul Gandhi has on Monday promised that the Congress-led government, if voted to power, will introduce a minimum income guarantee scheme for the bottom 20 percent of India’s population. At least 5 crore families will get Rs 72,000 per year into their bank accounts.
“Today is a historic day.. It is on this day that the Congress party launched its final assault on poverty. Five Crore of the poorest families in India, will receive Rs. 72,000 Per Year. #NyayForIndia is our dream & our pledge. The time for change has come,” the Congress chief said.
The scheme will cost Rs 3.6 lakh crore per annum. As per some analysts, this is unsustainable fiscally. The government will have to borrow huge amounts to fund this gigantic scheme.
Meanwhile, political pundits are saying that the scheme will be a “game-changer” this election season.
