India’s second moon mission, Chandrayaan-2, was launched today by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra's Nellore district.
India's former spinner Harbhajan Singh posted a congratulatory message for ISRO and meanwhile took a sly dig at Pakistan for not being able to achieve the same. Clearly taunting Pakistan (that has a moon on its flag), Harbhajan posted, "Some countries have moon on their flags (*Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Libya, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Malaysia, Maldives, and Mauritania). While some countries having their flags on Moon (*USA, Russia, India, China)."
ISRO mentioned in a statement of theirs, "Chandrayaan 2 is an Indian lunar mission that will boldly go where no country has ever gone before — the Moon’s south polar region. Through this effort, the aim is to improve our understanding of the Moon — discoveries that will benefit India and humanity as a whole. These insights and experiences aim at a paradigm shift in how lunar expeditions are approached for years to come — propelling further voyages into the farthest frontiers."
The success of the Chandrayaan 2 mission makes India the fourth country, followed by the US, Russia, and China to pull off a soft landing on the moon. It has been reported that the budget of ISRO is less than 20 times that of USA's NASA.
