In the just-concluded polls to elect the office-bearers of the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation, the ruling BJP in the State suffered a major setback as the Congress won the control of the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation by winning 69 out of the 77 seats.
Counting of votes was taken up yesterday. Right from the beginning, the Congress established leads in many seats and till the report was filed, it had been declared as the winner from 69 out of 77 seats, inflicting a huge defeat on the BJP in the State led by chief-minister Devendra Fadnavis.
With this, the BJP’s year-long winning streak in local body polls has been snapped.
Nanded is the home constituency of veteran Congress leader and former chief-minister Ashok Chavan. Though this has been a Congress ‘fort’ for the past 15 years, the BJP tried its best to break into the Congress bastion but failed badly.
