A 23-year-old woman, who had placed a food order of Rs 240 through an online delivery app and later cancelled it, was cheated of Rs 44,000 by a fake customer care executive.

When the woman, who works at a beauty salon, used a credit card she recently bought for the first time, the payment got stuck, leading to her dialing the customer care number. When she got no response, she dialed alternative numbers which she had found on Google. One of them had asked her to share the one-time passwords (OTPs) she received on her mobile phone to process the request.

A while after, the woman found that Rs 44,000 had been deducted from her account. She immediately lodged a complaint with the Vadapalani police and investigation is currently underway.
