Persistent Troubles for the Film ‘Jananayagan’: Amazon Takes a Bold Decision!

March 12, 2026 Published by Natarajan Karuppiah

Expectations for the film ‘Jananayagan’ have been sky-high among fans, as it marks the final movie starring Thalapathy Vijay before his full-fledged entry into politics. Directed by H. Vinoth and produced on a grand budget of approximately ₹500 crore, the film has been facing continuous delays due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Amazon Prime Video had previously acquired the digital rights for the film for a staggering ₹120 crore. According to the contract, there was a mandatory clause stating that the film must be released in theaters within a specific timeframe.

Initial Release Date: January 9, Current Status: As of mid-March, the film has yet to receive a censorship certificate.

Due to the prolonged delay in the decisions of the Censorship Revising Committee, there is a cloud of uncertainty surrounding the release date. Reports suggest that rather than keeping such a massive sum locked up in one project, Amazon has decided to pivot those funds toward other upcoming films.

The CBFC has reportedly refused to grant a certificate, citing: Scenes that could potentially hurt religious sentiments. Controversial portrayals regarding the military.

Despite the production house (KVN Productions) taking the matter to court, a resolution has not yet been reached. Consequently, rumors are circulating that the film’s release might only happen after the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections (June 2026).

The situation has further escalated as distributors, who had high hopes for the project, are now reportedly pressuring the production house to refund their advance payments.

In this difficult situation, the production company is reportedly planning to initiate talks with other streaming giants like Netflix or Disney+ Hotstar. However, it is expected that these platforms will only sign a deal once the censorship certificate is officially secured.
