A recently engaged couple had visited a well in a farmland near Vandalur-Minjur 400 feet road at Kandigai village and had noticed an old well with a staircase that led inside. As they got in and started clicking selfies, the woman, who sat on the edge of a stair, slipped and fell into the well. Her fiance, who jumped in to save her, was later rescued by a local, but the woman, who had smashed her head against the wall before she fell in, succumbed to her injuries.
The woman was identified as 24-year-old Mercy Staffy T, who was a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Pattabiram, Chennai. She was engaged to D Appu (24) a few days ago and the couple headed out on Monday to spend quality time together. "Appu had picked up Mercy from the house and the duo were roaming around the locality on their motorbike. At around 3 pm, they entered a farmland near Vandalur - Minjur 400 feet road at Kandigai village. As they noticed a farming well at the spot, Mercy had asked Appu to take photos around the well," a police official reportedly said. When a farmer heard Appu's cry for help as the two of them fell into the well, he rescued Appu, but couldn't locate Mercy.
Mercy's body was later taken out by a team of fire service personnel from Avadi. A case has been registered and the woman's body was sent to the Stanley Government Hospital for autopsy.
