The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been trying its best to gain a strong foothold in Tamil Nadu, has filed cases against Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thirumavalavan in as many as eight police stations in Chennai and elsewhere in the State for talking about ‘demolishing Hindu temples’ at various places.

The complaints have been filed on behalf of the Youth Wing of the BJP in the State in response to the remarks reportedly made by Thirumavalvan while addressing a public meeting recently on December 6 on the 25th anniversary of demolition of ‘Babri Masjid’ by Kar Sewaks at the disputed site in Ayodhya in 1992 where Hindus have been trying hard to erect a temple in the name of Lord Ram.

Thiruma reportedly said Lord Ram was a ‘figment of imagination’ and described the Babri demolition as ‘uncalled for’ to construct Ram Mandir. “Famed Hindu temples in Kancheepuram and Srirangam were built on Buddhist shrines (Viharams) after demolishing them. As such, these temples would have to be demolished to construct Viharams,” Thiruma is said to have spoken these during his controversial speech.

Thiruma has denied that he said so and said that hurting Hindus’ sentiments was never his objective. Complaints against Thiruma have been filed in police stations at Chennai, Coimbatore and elsewhere with the request to take appropriate action against the VCK president for fomenting communal trouble with his speech by talking openly about demolishing Hindu temples.
