Veteran actor Praveen Kumar Sobti famous for his role as Bheem in the epic serial ‘Mahabharat’ passed away on Monday night at 10.30 pm. He was 74 and is said to have sufferred a heart attack at his residence in Delhi and is survived by his wife and daughter.
Praveen Kumar Sobti was a Border Security Forces personnel and was also an accomplished athlete who won gold medals for discus throw in the 1966 and 1970 Asian Games. He made his debut in a negative role in the 1981 movie ‘Raksha’ and has played prominent roles in the super hits ‘Ajooba’, ‘Aaj Ka Arjun’ and ‘Ghayal’.
His most famous role however came when the legendary B.R. Chopra cast him as Bheem in ‘Maharbharat’ which was one of the longest running serials ever in the world.
To Tamil audiences Praveen Kumar Sobti achieved cult status playing ‘Bheemboy’ in Kamal Haasan’s epic comedy film ‘Michael Madhana Kamarajan’. Audiences to this day enjoy his scenes with Kamal where he would do anything asked of him without questioning his boss. RIP!
