In Thursday's Telugu-Tamil release 'ET', the character played by Suriya is asked by his onscreen mother (played by Saranya) whether he has urinated and is taking care of himself. This happens when he is away in a couple of scenes. The mother shows concern for her son's well-being by asking about whether he has taken food, urinated in a comical way.
The comedy has not gone down well with many. But there is a reason why the mother asks the question. Journalist-writer Subha Jayanagaraja tweets, "Unpopular Opinion, but I did not find the 'ucha' scene in 'ET' ewww. If a kid, however old, has had kidney stones and suffered, I'm sorry, the parent will definitely ask 'did you drink water' and 'ucha' questions. Because, you rarely forget that pain."
Review-writer Sowmya Rajendran agrees and adds her perspective. "I was totally ok with the mom asking the question, and would have been totally ok with the wife asking it too if it had been done differently. What I found cringe was the wife imitating the mother in this infuriating Oedipus complex that Tamil cinema loves," she tweets.
Directed by Pandiraj, the film has Priyanka Arul Mohan as Suriya's wife.
